These requirements apply to goods vehicles being motor vehicles made on or after 1st October 1985 and first used on or after 1st April 1986 which have gross design weight of over twelve tonnes. Such a vehicle must be fitted, in relation to all its wheels, with spray containment devices which meet British Standard specification BS AU 200: 1984 or, in the case of a device fitted on or after 1 st May 1987, BS AU 200:1986.
There are many exemptions;
- 4x4 vehicles
- A vehicle with a low ground clearance of at least 400mm
- A works truck
- A broken down vehicle
- A motor vehicle incapable of exceeding 30mph
- A vehicle exempt from side guards
- A concrete mixer
- A vehicle being taken to a place where, by prior arrangement, a spray suppression device is to be fitted
The requirement does not apply to a vehicle fitted with spray suppression devices in accordance with EC Directive 226/91 [64(2A)]
The duty to fit spray equipment devices does not derogate from the requirements for a vehicle to be fitted with mudwings.
