Welcome to Wheelbase Engineering Ltd
Wheelbase Engineering Ltd is a long established family company that in the early days did exactly that, modify or ‘re-engineer’ the wheelbase’s of truck chassis’. At that time, by today’s standards chassis’ were relatively crude in their construction with low level technology, however legislation is ever present and operators were forced to modify chassis’ to comply with increasing demands.
Over the intervening years chassis’ have developed at such a rate that they are scarcely comparable with those of just a few years ago let alone decades, now sporting high levels of sophistication in every aspect of their design, which has created need for the likes of Wheelbase Engineering Ltd whom have grown up in parallel with the truck manufacturers and are capable of offering the same service levels to ever more demanding customers purchasing chassis from a world market dominated by Europe and the Far East. With their distinctive red and cream livery Palmer and Harvey vehicles of all size are a familiar sight to many of us, but they are rarely seen during the night unless you happen across them on the motorways between Bristol and Swansea trunking their demountable refrigerated bodies for onward delivery around Wales the following day.
Most companies would question the use of demountables when considering refrigerated bodies, sighting the loss of payload as a major stumbling block and for many that may be the case, but for those who distribute small and often loads to retail outlets weight is not necessarily the deciding factor. With this type of operation priorities tend to change to reliability of service and the efficient use of their vehicles, which as in this case can mean reducing the stem mileage to the minimum wherever possible.

Tesco distribution has taken the initiative step of introducing Wheelbase Engineering Ltd designed refrigerated drawbar combinations for deliveries to their ‘Metro’ and ‘Express’ stores. The combinations are based around a Mercedes Antos 2540L 6x2 prime mover fitted with a Solomon Commercials Ltd body and coupled to a Wheelbase Engineering Ltd drawbar trailer fitted with a second refrigerated body. The geometry and operating features, including the truck towing package and drawbar trailers were designed by Wheelbase Engineering Ltd to meet a very specific operating criteria requested by Tesco and required close co-operation with both Mercedes Benz UK Ltd and Solomon Commercials Ltd.
We’re all familiar with our local Tesco ‘Metro’ or ‘Express’ store, but for most how the products that we buy arrive on the shelves is of little interest, however for the distribution arm of Tesco getting the goods to store can be problematic for numerous reasons, not least being the stem mileage to these small stores and access problems at sites that are often located on busy high streets or in residential areas not ideally suited to receiving deliveries made using conventional high volume vehicles.
The beauty of the drawbar combination is that it can be broken down into smaller deliveries and is frequently easier to manoeuvre in confined spaces, yet it will provide more volume that the ever popular 13600mm semi-trailer.

Wheelbase Engineering Ltd open ‘Privately owned Test Facility’ (POTF’s) for third party IVA inspections by DVSA.
Having invested in DVSA standard test facilities for the inspection and certification of commercial vehicles and trailers which were originally intended for solely our own use, these test facilities have now been opened up for the use of third party clients.
The obvious benefit to our customers is that we are in a position to provide added value services, such as assistance navigating the complexities of the administrative requirements, workshop services to correct that small error in build specification and a flexible approach with timing issues.
There is a substantial learning curve for the independent bodybuilder considering using the IVA route to WVTA, therefore being able to speak to someone with experience in the process can provide a significant amount of peace of mind in the knowledge that they can ask questions knowing that the answers will be the result of personal experience using the system and liaising with both the VCA and DVSA.
In the first instance enquiries should be directed to Simon Pickles or Julie Misell.

Godfrey Syrett Ltd the Newcastle upon Tyne manufacturer of office furniture has chosen Fraikin Ltd and their preferred supplier Wheelbase Engineering Ltd to provide two alternative transport solutions for their business where the demands of their situation required radically different equipment specifications.
One solution is the provision of conventional fixed GRP bodies with cantilever tail lifts for product distribution to the trade, but the second is far more interesting as it involves a intensive demountable body operation running between two facilities on a multi trip daily shuttle.
The term 'Horses for courses' ideally describes these two solutions, whilst that other expression 'One size fits all' really is proven to be a myth.

Mertrux Ltd of Derby chose Wheelbase Engineering Ltd as their preferred partner when it came to the modification of their Mercedes Sprinter 313 CDI long wheelbase chassis’ to accept special purpose bodies with a 6000mm clear internal load space capable of transporting plastic extrusions manufactured by Eurocell Ltd.
At accommodate the body length required, firstly the wheelbase and rear overhang of the chassis’ had to be increased to provide a vehicle that is both driver friendly and also maintains legal axle weights when fully loaded. The modification of chassis’ in this way has long been one of Wheelbase Engineering’s strengths, therefore when approached regarding this application a solution was readily available.
In this case Wheelbase Engineering Ltd have also provided the bodywork which has been designed not with just the delivery of product in mind but also that of long term vehicle appearance, hence the extensive use of anodised alloy sections and galvanised components which has removed the need for any finish painting processes.
