Wheelbase Engineering Ltd is a long established family company that in the early days did exactly that, modify or ‘re-engineer’ the wheelbase’s of truck chassis’.  At that time, by today’s standards chassis’ were relatively crude in their construction with low level technology, however legislation is ever present and operators were forced to modify chassis’ to comply with increasing demands.

Over the intervening years chassis’ have developed at such a rate that they are scarcely comparable with those of just a few years ago let alone decades, now sporting high levels of sophistication in every aspect of their design, which has created need for the likes of Wheelbase Engineering Ltd whom have grown up in parallel with the truck manufacturers and are capable of offering the same service levels to ever more demanding customers purchasing chassis from a world market dominated by Europe and the Far East.

The natural progression for Wheelbase Engineering was to develop our portfolio of products within the transport industry; hence we were soon fitting fifth wheels and drawbar trailer towing equipment to complement the trailers that were being fabricated in our Blackburn factory.

Since then we have increased our reputation in the market by carrying out ever more complex conversions, which meant investing in purpose built premises just down the road in Darwen.  This was followed by the acquisition of the intellectual property rights to the RSG range of demountable equipment and moving floors, then most recently by the purchase of Abel Systems Ltd in Chesterfield.  The inclusion of Abel Systems now not only makes Wheelbase Engineering the most prominent producer of demountable equipment, but also extends its capacity for traditional chassis ‘re-engineering’ work to be carried out in a more southerly location nearer to much of its client base.

As an added bonus, Abel Systems also have the ability to provide bespoke bodywork to complement its range of demountable systems and drawbar trailers, which once again leads to greater diversification.
